Bart Heijlen (1966) is a Flemish contemporary painter with a great liking for the human figure. He recycles traditional painting without any nostalgia for the past whatsoever and likes to give a twist to history. His figures, slightly grotesque but also recognizable and confronting, often seem to be thrown in a time warp. In his work he seeks to grasp the absurdity of our existance and, being a belgian, a touch of surrealism is never far away. In this twilight zone he looks for beauty, consolation, peace of mind..... and a way to make a mockery of all of us magnificent wretches.
